i havent really been sleeping lately + i realized something: going to bed late + getting up early makes me feel alive by reminding me what it must feel like to be dead.

anyways when i do rest, i rest in peace.
generally speaking of course

yet here, laertes! aboard, aboard for shame!
the wind sits in the shoulder of your sail,
and you are stay'd for.
there... my blessing with thee!
and these few precepts in thy memory
look thou character. give thy thoughts no tongue,
nor any unproportion'd thought his act.
be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar.
those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried
grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel;
but do not dull thy palm with entertainment
of each new-hatch'd, unfledg'd comrade. beware
bear't that th' opposed may beware of thee.
give every man thy ear, but few thy voice;
take each man's censure, but reserve thy judgement.
costly thy habit as thy purse can buy,
but not express'd in fancy; rich, not gaudy;
for the apparel oft proclaims the man;
and they in france of the best rank and station
are of a most select and generous chief in that.
neither a borrower, nor a lender be;
for loan oft loses both itself and friend,
and borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.
this above all: to thine own self be true,
and it must follow, as the night the day,
thou canst not then be false to any man.
farewell; my blessing season this in thee!

fucking great.

11 March 2009

most vivid dream night of my life i think. rapid succession of about four intense, really detailed dream sequences. i woke up during some of them and when i went back to sleep i went right back into the scenario. my dreams are becoming increasingly more vivid and comprehensive than my own reality.

(my astrology chart)

at work in the photo lab today friend/photography grad student bethany, a really amazing girl who lived in burma for several years doing photojournalism work, looked up my astrology chart for me online. this was after an in-depth conversation about how different life is on the east coast compared to the west coast and the eastern hemisphere. ive never looked at my astrology chart before, its pretty interesting stuff. an astrology chart is most simply a diagram representing the location of the planets in relation to the time and location of an important event, such as a person's birth. look up your astrology chart here.

i was talking with mackenzie about summer plans & we somehow got talking about how traveling around europe is great solo. this made me think of the time i was in versailles a few summers ago with some people & i just wandered away for the day. it was the best. the pictures above are ones i just rediscovered from one of my older hard drives of that day in the versailles gardens.

understand that the body
is merely the foam of a wave,
the shadow of a shadow.
snap the flower arrows of desire
and then, unseen,
escape the king of death.
and travel on.

death overtakes the man
who gathers flowers
when with distracted mind and thirsty senses
he searches vainly for happiness
in the pleasures of the world
death fetches him away
as a flood carries off a sleeping village.

(i rediscovered my copy of the dhammapada today. almost immediately upon reading its words, i began to feel indescribably better than i have felt in weeks)

vito acconci
(3 Flags for 1 Space and 6 Regions, 1979-1981)

im working on a paper for an art history course about the work above by vito acconci, an american artist who works in a variety of media including video art, installation, performance art and printmaking. i tend to always have a difficult time writing these 'visual analysis' papers because i find myself becoming more intrigued with the artists life and covert meanings behind the piece than i am with the aspects of the work i am supposed to be analyzing.
